Lavrov flies to Kazakhstan to attend OSCE ministerial meeting

MOSCOW. July 16 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is expected to arrive in Almaty on Friday evening to attend an informal meeting of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe's foreign ministers, which is scheduled for July 17.

The ministerial meeting will discuss, among other things, the possibility of calling an OSCE summit, a source from the Russian Foreign Ministry told Interfax.

High-level OSCE meetings have not been held since 1999. The summit was proposed by Kazakhstan, which holds the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office in 2010, and was backed by Russia.

Other topics to be discussed will include the situation in Kyrgyzstan and cooperation with Afghanistan, the source said.

Lavrov will also meet with several counterparts on the sidelines of the informal meeting, including possibly with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kostyantyn Hryshchenko and Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Ruslan Kazakbayev, the source said.
