Senior Russian policeman accused of massive theft

IZHEVSK, Russia. Aug 11 (Interfax) - The head of the economic crime department of the Interior Ministry of the Russian republic of Udmurtia and five officers under his command have been charged with large-scale theft, and the department chief has also been charged with bribery, the Russian prosecution service said.

At the behest of the department head, the five officers stole 5.43 million rubles and $700 from a private individual in June this year, the prosecution service's Investigative Committee said in a press release, citing evidence obtained.

The six were charged with large-scale theft committed through abuse of authority.

The department chief was also accused of taking a bribe of 3 million rubles from a commercial firm.

The Investigative Committee said three of the suspects, including the chief, were in police custody, two were under house arrest, and one had been released but told not to leave Izhevsk, Udmurtia's capital, until the investigation is over.
