Ex-Kyrgyz president Akayev loses immunity from prosecution (Part 2)

BISHKEK. Aug 13 (Interfax) - Kyrgyz President Roza Otunbayeva signed a decree on August 12 stripping the republic's first President Askar Akayev of immunity from prosecution, a spokesman for the Kyrgyz interim government told Interfax on Friday.

The Prosecutor General's Office of Kyrgyzstan has been ordered to "take all of the necessary measures to prosecute Akayev, as well as to secure his extradition to Kyrgyzstan," the spokesman said.

The document came into force on the day it was signed.

Akayev is accused of permitting the use of firearms against civilians, handing over Kyrgyz territories to China and Kazakhstan, "destroying the national wealth and usurping power through holding so-called people's referenda," the spokesman said.
