Russia notifies Thai ambassador of its ‘disappointment’ over Bout extradition ruling

MOSCOW. Aug 23 (Interfax) - Thai ambassador to Russia Chalermpol Thanchitt has been invited to the Russian Foreign Ministry, where he was notified about Russia's "extreme disappointment" over a Thai court ruling to extradite Russian citizen Viktor Bout to the U.S.

Thanchitt was notified about the "extreme disappointment and perplexity regarding the Thai Court of Appeals' politically motivated ruling going against a ruling by that country's Criminal Court passed in August 2009, which denied Bout's extradition to the U.S. due to insufficient evidence of the Russian citizen's guilt provided by the U.S.," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

"The ambassador promised to convey Russia's position to the Thai government," it said.

Thanchitt was invited to the Foreign Ministry and met with Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin.

Earlier in the day, the Thai Court of Appeals ruled that Bout would be extradited in the next three months for arms dealing charges related to Colombia.
