Russia to deliver Bastion missile systems with Yakhont missiles to Syria under $300 Mln contract - source

MOSCOW. Sept 20 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia will supply Yakhont supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles to Syria with Bastion coastal mobile missile systems, a defense-industry source told Interfax-AVN.

"Damascus hopes to get two Bastion systems as a minimum. Given that one system has an ammunition load of up to 36 Yakhont missiles, the batch will be quite significant," he said.

The deal will bring Russia at least $300 million, he also said.

"Damascus is strongly interested to buy these systems for their ability to shield a 600 kilometer-long stretch of the coast from a possible sea-launched attack," the source said.

Despite Israel's tough opposition, Syria will likely get the Bastion systems, he said.

Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said during his recent visit to the United States that, Russia would honor the contract to deliver Yakhont missiles to Syria.
