Russia to present new initiatives at UN GA session - official

MOSCOW. Sept 20 (Interfax) - Russia is taking multiple steps to strengthen the mechanisms of maintaining international peace and stability and plans to propose new initiatives at the forthcoming General Assembly of the United Nations, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Yakovenko said in an interview with Interfax.

"At the UN General Assembly we propose various initiatives, which are, in our view, of strategic importance for international security. In light of the U.S.-Russian treaty on further reduction and limitation of strategic offensive weapons signed in Prague on April 8, 2010, Russia and the U.S. will jointly submit with the UN GA a new draft resolution on bilateral reductions of strategic offensive weapons and a new framework of strategic relations," he said.

"This Treaty attests to the resolve of our countries to strengthen partnership in addressing common problems regarding international security," the deputy minister said. "We hope that the U.S.-Russian efforts in this area will be backed by all nations," he said.

Also, at the 65th session, the Russian delegation will submit other, "already traditional draft resolutions of the UN General Assembly regarding the disarmament problems, titled 'Transparency and confidence-building measures in space activity' and 'Achievements in informatization and telecommunications in the context of international security'," Yakovenko said.

"We hope that these resolutions will be adopted by consensus like they were at the last session," the deputy foreign minister said.

This year "we marked the 65th anniversary of the Great Victory," he recalled. "We will continue to actively oppose attempts to review the decisions of the Nuremberg tribunal and turn racial, ethnic and religious hatred into a tool of political struggle," Yakovenko said.

"We are upset by the rise of revanchist sentiments and glorification of the Nazi war criminals, observed in a number of countries. This is unacceptable because it leads to the justification of neo-fascist and neo-Nazi ideologies, aggressive nationalism and xenophobia. This is exactly why we will again submit with the General Assembly a draft resolution on the unacceptability of certain practices facilitating the escalation of contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance," he said.

"We consider building up cooperation between the UN and regional organizations a promising area. As in the last year, Russia along with its partners from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is set to submit draft resolutions about cooperation between the UN and CSTO and between the UN and the SCO," Yakovenko said.

"Moreover, we will continue efforts to consolidate the positions and broaden cooperation between the United Nations and the Eurasian Economic Community (EuAsEC) and the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC). We will actively support the passage of the relevant resolution at the 65th session of the UN GA about the UN's cooperation with these organizations," the Russian deputy foreign minister said.
