Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier preparing for maneuvers in Atlantic

MURMANSK, Sept 20 (Interfax-AVN) - The heavy aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov is preparing for a journey to the Atlantic Ocean to conduct maneuvers, the Northern Fleet said in a statement.

The cruiser has returned after a complex repair and refinishing in a dry dock. The crew are undergoing basic training before setting out to sea, perfecting the organization of the service and training the replenishment.

"The Admiral Kuznetsov will sail to the Atlantic Ocean in late September for a period of training. The Northern Fleet's deck air crews, currently training at an engineering center in Crimea, will practice their skills at sea," the statement says.

The air carrier, whose former names are the Sovetsky Soyuz (Soviet Union), Riga, Leonid Brezhnev and Tbilisi, is the only ship of its class in the Russian Navy. It is intended to hit large surface targets and provide cover for naval formations from enemy attacks.

The cruiser will carry Sukhoi Su fighter jets and Kamov Ka helicopters.
