Russia, Vietnam sign NPP agreement

HANOI. November 1 (Interfax) - Russia and Vietnam have signed an intergovernmental cooperation agreement for construction of the first Vietnamese nuclear power plant. The document was signed as part of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's visit to Vietnam.

The Ninh Thuan NPP with two 1,000-1,200 megawatt power units will be built by 2020 in the Phuoc Dinh commune in the Thuan Nam District of the Ninh Thuan province, said Atomstroyexport (the general contractor in this project).

"This is our standard reactor and the most effective project that Russia is currently offering worldwide," Rosatom General Director Sergei Kiriyenko told journalists, commenting on the signed document.

The agreement also involved the opening of a nuclear technology development center in Vietnam. In particular, Russia has offered to the Vietnamese authorities to build a research reactor under this project.

Other documents signed on Sunday include a tripartite agreement between the Vietnamese energy company EVN, Rosatom and Group E4 regarding the preparation of a feasibility study for the NPP construction project. E4 will be in charge of preparing the feasibility study, Kiriyenko added.

Hopefully, the Ninh Thuan NPP project is just the first step towards a long-term Russian-Vietnamese cooperation on nuclear energy, the Rosatom chief said.
