MOSCOW. Nov 1 (Interfax) - The Russian Interior Ministry has announced a sharp increase in the number of attacks on police officers.
"The number of violent attacks on police officers, which lead to health damage or death, has nearly tripled in the past two years. About 900 such crimes are perpetrated annually," Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev said at a conference of internal security chiefs on Monday.
From 73,000 to 75,000 illegal actions against police officers, a third of them criminal, happen each year, the minister said.
"We are particularly concerned about the situation in the North Caucasus, where many of our colleagues die," he said.
