Russia should join 'highest league' of nanotech states by 2015 - Rosnano chief

MOSCOW. Nov 3 (Interfax) - Russia should enter the "highest league" of global nanotechnology leaders before 2015, the head of state-run corporation Rosnano, Anatoly Chubais, said at an international forum in Moscow on Wednesday.

"We are lagging behind a bit at the moment. A dozen countries have already made breakthroughs, and Russia has moved forward in the past two years as well. Our task is to join the highest league of world leaders in nanotechnologies [by 2015]," Chubais said.

"A nanotechnology boom is taking place in the world today," he said.

Experts have calculated that the global output of nanotech products stood as $250 billion in 2009, as compared with $54 billion in 2001.

According to the most conservative estimates, this figure could reach $800 billion in 2015. Some experts even expect it to grow to up to $3 trillion.

Rosnano has already confirmed 94 projects in 30 Russian regions, Chubais said.

Rosnano will invest $4.1 billion in the projects, and private companies will provide $6 billion more.
