MAKHACHKALA. Nov 9 (Interfax) - A large-scale terrorist attack was prevented in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan on Tuesday, a spokesman for the Russian Counterterrorism Committee told Interfax.
A powerful explosive device was found in the trunk of a car parked near House No. 22 on Vtoraya Street in the village of Severny, the spokesman said.
"A K9 service dog indicated the presence of explosives. The area was cordoned off and people were evacuated from nearby houses. The explosive device was defused by specialists of the local branch of FSB (Federal Security Service) at around 3:30 p.m.," he said.
The bomb was made from a 65-liter container filled with a mixture of ammonia nitrate and aluminum powder and equipped with a car alarm-based remote control detonator, the spokesman said.
"The car bomb was found and disposed of thanks to a series of measures taken by the republic's counterterrorism commission, the operative staff and law enforcement services ahead of the Kurban Bajram holiday and Police Day. It helped prevent a massive death toll," the spokesman said.
