Russians doubt expediency of cooperating with WTO, NATO - opinion polls

MOSCOW. Nov 12 (Interfax) - Fewer Russians think that cooperation with such international organizations as the WTO and NATO is really expedient and meets Russia's interests, according to a Levada-Center opinion poll.

As many as 45% of those polled said that Russia would not benefit from closer ties with NATO and 22% disagreed (down from 44% in 2008).

Less than a half of the respondents (44%) support Russia's accession to the WTO (48% in 2008) and 32% gave no answer (28% in 2008).

By contrast, the share of those who trust the European Union and support deeper integration with the EU has grown to 56% (52% in 2007) with 23% distrusting the EU and 22% undecided.

The poll was held in 44 Russian regions on October 22-25.

Another poll suggests that 56% of Russians are positive towards the United States and 68% are positive towards the European Union and Ukraine. Those who are negative are 29%, 16% and 20% respectively.
