Policeman attacked in Dagestan, Chechnya

MOSCOW/ROSTOV-ON-DON. Nov 15 (Interfax) - An explosion occurred on the side of a road in Makhachkala when a police vehicle was passing by, no one was hurt, a law enforcement source told Interfax on Monday.

"An improvised explosive device went off in the Leninsky district of the town of Makhachkala last night when a UAZ vehicle with three local police patrol officers was passing by. No one was hurt," the source said.

Meanwhile, a police officer who had been treated for a fractured arm at the Khasavyurt town hospital in Dagestan, was killed in the ward, the town police told Interfax-AVN on Monday.

"A man entered the hospital ward, where the injured patrol officer, Senior Lieutenant Karamudin Gabiyev, was being treated and shot him dead on Sunday afternoon," the source said.

The assailant managed to flee the scene unnoticed, he said.

A suspicious object similar to an explosive device has been found in Makhachkala, Dagestan's law enforcement authorities told Interfax.

"A suspicious object in the form of a pipe with protruding wires was found on a roadside on Akhmedjan Sultan street at around 6:30 a.m. Moscow time. The object was examined by experts with detection dogs. As a result the dog showed that this could be an explosive device," the source said.

The scene was cordoned off and measures are being taken to defuse the device, he said.

Meanwhile, a policeman has been killed in an attack on a police patrol checkpoint in the Chechen capital of Grozny, a source from law enforcement authorities told Interfax on Monday.

"The senior patrol police inspector, who was on duty at the time, was shot by men traveling in a Zhiguli car in the Staropromyslovsky district of the town of Grozny on Sunday evening. Then the assailants fled. The policeman sustained fatal injuries," the source said.
