Over 300 gang members killed in North Caucasus in 2010 - FSB chief (Part 2)

YESSENTUKI. Nov 19 (Interfax) - A total of 332 armed group members have been killed in Russia's North Caucasus Federal District since the start of the year, Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) chief Alexander Bortnikov said in Yessentuki on Friday.

"Since the start of the year, more than 50 counter-terrorism operations and numerous combat operations have been conducted on the territory of the district, as a result of which 332 gang members were eliminated after putting up armed resistance," Bortnikov said.

A total of 530 armed group members and their accomplices were detained, he said.

More than 1,000 weapons, 390 improvised explosive devices, more than 1.5 tonnes of explosives, about 8,500 shells and grenades, as well as 135,000 cartridges were confiscated from caches set up by gangs, he said.
