Russia tightens liability for safety violations linked to chemical weapon disposal

MOSCOW. Dec 10 (Interfax) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has signed legislative amendments banning the use of buildings and industrial sites located on the premises of chemical weapons storage facilities for purposes other than those permitted by law.

The amendments, which were introduced into the law regulating the disposal of chemical weapons and the Code on Administrative Offences, were adopted by the State Duma on November 26 and were approved by the Federation Council on December 1, the presidential press service has reported.

They set administrative sanctions for officials and legal entities convicted of breaching the procedure for using facilities where chemical arms are stored or disposed of.

The amendments also allow the federal agency in charge of supervising the use of such facilities to handle cases of administrative offences committed in this area.
