Putin criticizes juries

MOSCOW. Dec 27 (Interfax) - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has criticized juries in Russia.

"Jury courts are ineffective," Putin said at the State Council session on Monday.

"In some regions, jury courts make their decisions on the basis of clan or ethical principles, not on the basis of the gravity of the crime," he said.

"For this reason, I believe we can think about giving every person who can be sentenced to the death penalty the right to be tried by a jury, but these courts should be taken to the federal level, the level of federal districts," Putin said.
