TASHKENT. Jan 19 (Interfax) - Uzbek border guards have detained a citizen of Afghanistan carrying a large amount of drugs.
The man was carrying 27 kilos of raw opium and a pistol, the press service for the State Border Guard Committee of the Uzbek National Security Service told Interfax on Wednesday.
"The man had swum the Amudarya [river] to take a large amount of drugs to Uzbekistan," the press service said.
According to the State Border Guard Committee, attempts to bring drugs into Uzbekistan are made from Afghanistan and other neighboring countries.
Several days earlier, special services had cut a drug supply channel from Tajikistan. The four drug couriers were detained in the Surkhandarya region, which borders on Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Fourteen kilos of raw opium was seized in the operation.
Criminal cases have been opened on the basis of all these incidents. Investigations have been launched.
