MOSCOW. Jan 31 (Interfax-AVN) - The Vostok unified strategic command will dispose of about 300,000 tonnes of old munitions before the end of 2011, 29th Army spokesman Valery Shcheblanin told Interfax-AVN on Monday.
"The Eastern Military District command plans to dispose of 296,400 tonnes of old munitions by the end of 2011. The munitions have been stored at depots and bases of the former Far Eastern and Siberian military districts, the Pacific fleet and the Far Eastern Air Force and Air Defense formation," he said.
About 900 tonnes of munitions will be disposed of daily, the source said.
"The reason why the Defense Ministry has decided to dispose of the old munitions itself is due to the fact that the amount of old munitions many time exceeds the capacity of disposal plants," he said.
