Kazakh MPs agree to debate early presidential election initiative

ASTANA. Feb 1 (Interfax) - The lower chamber of Kazakhstan's parliament, the Majlis, agreed on Tuesday to start to debate legislative amendments that propose holding early presidential elections.

Majlis Deputy Rakhmet Mukashev said that the chamber had received a bill entitled "On the Introduction of Amendments to a Number of Constitutional Laws".

"The bill introduces amendments into the constitutional laws on elections and the president that envision the possibility of holding early presidential elections. Under the bill, early presidential elections could be called by the president following an appropriate decision and could take place within two months after such a decision is adopted," Mukashev said.

On Monday, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev proposed replacing a referendum to extend the presidential term in office by early presidential elections.

Nazarbayev's advisor Yermukhamet Yertysbayev has said he thinks that the early presidential elections could be held in three months.
