Kyrgyzstan, U.S. sign agreement on fuel shipments to Manas transit center

BISHKEK. Feb 8 (Interfax) - The governments of Kyrgyzstan and the United States have signed an agreement on fuel shipments by the Kyrgyz side to the American Transit Center Manas.

The agreement was signed on Tuesday by Kyrgyz Energy Minister Askarbek Shadiyev and U.S. Charge d'affaires Larry Memmott.

A new process was launched today, Memmott said after the signing ceremony. The U.S. will start buying fuel from the Kyrgyz side, he said.

The agreement will last as long as the Transit Center remains in Kyrgyzstan, so the Kyrgyz side will be free to spend the earnings on health care and education, Memmott also said.

The Kyrgyz government will select a supplier on its own and will cover up to half of the Transit Center's needs in aviation fuel, he said adding that the first fuel will arrive after the sides come to terms on the price.

The other half of the need in aviation fuel will be covered by the American company, Mina Corp.
