MOSCOW. March 28 (Interfax-AVN) - Interior Troops guard 10 nuclear power plants and almost 100 more strategic facilities, including seven closed territories, in Russia, chief of the troops' press service Vasili Panchenkov has told Interfax-AVN.
"The troops reliably guarantee the safe operation of the facilities that they guard and promptly stop attempts of illegal actions, preventing trespassers from entering clsoed territories, guarded facilities and special cargos," he said.
In addition, Interior Troops are in charge of public order and security in 52 cities, ten of them with a population of over one milion, Panchenkov added.
"Interior Troops are involved in guaranteeing public security at transport infrastructure facilities, including metros and railway stations," he said.
Earlier Commander of Interior Troops Gen. Nikolai Rogozhkin said that the Defense Ministry is in charge of covering Russian NPPs and other nuclear facilities from air attacks. The air defense weapons of Interior Troops are used to cover formations directly involved in hostilities, he said.
