Ban Ki-moon urges ceasefire, political dialogue in Libya

MOSCOW. April 22 (Interfax) - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called for an effective ceasefire and political dialogue in Libya.

Addressing reporters in Moscow on Thursday, he said that an effective ceasefire providing for humanitarian aid with subsequent political dialogue is a current UN priority in Libya.

Ban Ki-moon said that he has repeatedly called for an end to bloodshed in that North African country.

Bringing humanitarian aid to Libyan civilians is a priority task for the UN, he said, adding that more than half a million people have already fled Libya and that another 3.5 million might follow suit, which is something the UN doesn't want.

To an Interfax question about the possibility of NATO's ground operation in Libya, he said that the United Nations is concerned to expand humanitarian aid in Libya.

Earlier in the day, Ban Ki-moon visited the UNICEF-sponsored Center for Curative Pedagogics.
