Russia, Belarus, Georgia aspire to modernize Peruvian Su-25 jets

LIMA. May 16 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia, Belarus and Georgia aspire to modernize Sukhoi Su-25 assault jets of the Peruvian Air Force, head of the Rosoboronexport delegation to the SITDEF Peru 2011 defense technologies show Sergei Ladygin told reporters.

"Georgia and Belarus have made [modernization] bids. What can I say? There was a Soviet Union once, and its plants were left in Belarus and Georgia. They have a sovereign right to make such bids. We have this right too. It is the client's choice," he said.

The country to modernize the assault jets of the Peruvian Air Force has not been chosen, Ladygin told reporters.

The Mikoyan MiG-29 fighter jets of Peru are being modernized by Russia's MiG Corporation. "This is a contract of MiG, not of Rosoboronexport, and it is being fulfilled actively," he said.

Peru will probably choose the country to modernize Su-25 jets after the second round of presidential elections planned for June 5.
