Russia supplies Gepard 3.9 frigate trainer to Vietnam

ST. PETERSBURG. May 19 (Interfax-AVN) - R.E.T. Kronshtadt, an element of the Transas Group, has supplied the second naval trainer to Vietnam for teaching crews of Gepard 3.9 frigates, R.E.T. Kronshtadt General Director Yevgeny Komrakov said.

"The Gepard trainer has been supplied to Vietnam. It is being assembled there," he said.

Earlier the company supplied Vietnam with a trainer for crews of Molniya missile-carrying cutters.

The Gepard trainer has 56 work seats. It has three training modes: individual training, a unit drill supervised by the unit commander, and training of the entire crew supervised by the captain, Komrakov said.

"This is a very complex and expensive trainer, which gives the necessary skills to the entire crew, from the commander to the sailor, for the accomplishment of combat duties," he said.

Gepard 3.9 frigates are built to search for, follow and combat ships, submarines and air targets, to escort vessels, to go on patrols and to protect economic zones.

Earlier reports said that Vietnam had purchased 20 Sukhoi Su-30MK2, 12 Molniya missile carrying cutters (two delivered directly and 10 produced with a license), two Gepard frigates, six submarines of Project 6363 'Varshavyanka' (NATO code name Kilo), several squads of S-300 PMU-1 anti-aircraft missile systems, a mobile coastal missile system Bastion with unified supersonic homing anti-ship missiles Yakhont, a shoulder-held anti-aircraft missile launcher Igla and some other armaments.
