Mutual renunciation of force way to settle Libya crisis - Medvedev (Part 2)

MOSCOW. May 19 (Interfax) - The conflict in Libya can only be settled peacefully, President Dmitry Medvedev said.

"Although problems persist, methods after all exist to overcome the current impasses, I mean the situation in Libya which, in my opinion, can only be settled using peaceful means with both sides renouncing the use of force," Medvedev said at a press conference after talks with Austrian President Heinz Fischer.

Talks with the Austrian president also addressed better uses of UN potential.

Fischer said in reference to the international agenda that a high level of understanding had been reached with the Russian side.

"I also think that UN Resolution 1973 on the developments in Libya was the right decision, but it must be applied in a corresponding manner," he said.

The main goal of this resolution is to protect civilians, he said.

The use of military force is only possible in an emergency and only on the basis of the Security Council's mandate within the framework of the tasks formulated by the Security Council," Fischer said.

On the situation in the Middle East, Medvedev said that ways to settle such problems must be found.

"Moscow has already offered to host talks on the Middle East. We hope that this will really yield a certain result," Fischer said.
