MOSCOW. May 20 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia will create a new missile defense system against space threats very soon, Col. Igor Morozov, head of the Space Troops Operational Command Headquarters, said.
"A mobile missile defense system will be created in the nearest future against space threats, which will allow the detection, selection, capture, autotracking and impact on a ballistic object in deliberate and non-deliberate interference conditions," Morozov told a conference on missile-defense issues at the Military Academy of the Russian Army General Staff on Friday.
"Concurrently, efforts are under way to develop another type of attack system in the interest of providing missile security," Morozov said.
"By specifications, this system will be analogous to the 'A' missile system [the A-135 anti-ballistic missile system deployed around Moscow]," he said.
Efforts continue to "enhance and increase the combat capabilities of the existing missile defense system both by upgrading counter-missiles and by improving information and support systems," Morozov said.
