TBILISI. May 23 (Interfax) - Leader of the Georgian Christian Democratic Movement Giorgi Targamadze has urged the authorities to review its decision to hold a military parade on the Independence Day on May 26.
"Any political standoff is a natural phenomenon for a democratic society, but the politics ends where armed persons are brought to the battlefield. Unfortunately, the Georgian history has seen examples where such irresponsible actions and a military standoff provoked by politicians caused fateful and deplorable results that we are still reaping today," Targamadze told journalists on Sunday.
All political forces should refrain from "including armed forces in political processes," he said.
Following today's incident outside the Public Television building there have been increased fears of a likely provocation on May 26 which may lead to violence, Targamadze said.
"People who wear the uniform of a motherland defender do not need additional explanations that this weapon must be used against Georgia's enemies and not for opposing their own fellow-citizens," the Georgian parliamentary minority leader said.
