Ammunition disposal resumes near Ulyanovsk after arsenal blaze 18 months ago

ULYANOVSK. May 23 (Interfax) - The scrapping of artillery projectiles from a military arsenal, where a man-caused disaster occurred in November 2009, will continue at a test site in the Cherdakly district, Ulyanovsk region, in late May.

Work will be carried out by the method of explosive demolition, both at the test site and on the grounds of the arsenal proper, located in the Zavolzhsk district of Ulyanovsk, the Ulyanovsk city hall said in a statement on Friday.

"All necessary safety measures have been taken at the ammunition disposal sites, work will be carried out by professional bomb disposal experts on weekdays from 8 a.m. till 6 p.m. Moscow time," the statement said.

The disposal of the ammunition from the Ulyanovsk arsenal was suspended last winter due to heavy snowfalls, regional Security Council spokesman Azat Sibishov told Interfax.

"The disposal is due to be completed in September this year," Sibishov said.

A fire that erupted at the Navy arsenal N31 in Ulyanovsk on November 13, 2009 caused a spontaneous explosion of ammunition. Two servicemen were killed. A month later a military enterprise employee died in hospital after sustaining severe burns.

Also, 60 people were injured, 13 of them were hospitalized.

The demolition of the arsenal ammunition which failed to explode began at the test site in the Cherdakly district in the Ulyanovsk region (13 kilometers from the enterprise) on June 23, 2010.
