Suspected Volgograd bombers detained in Astrakhan region

MOSCOW. May 23 (Interfax) - Members of a group suspected of planning terrorist acts in different parts of Russia were detained in Astrakhan region at the beginning of May, an official spokesman for the Russian Federation Investigative Committee Vladimir Markin has told Interfax.

He said that four active members of the group - adepts of radical Islam - were detained back on May 7.

The leader of the group offered resistance and was killed.

The detainees are suspected of staging the April 26 explosions outside of the buildings of the Volgograd police academy and the Volgograd region traffic police headquarters.
