MOSCOW. May 23 (Interfax) - Russia has promised to back Palestine if it asks the UN to recognize its independence, Musa Abu-Marzuk, deputy political director of Hamas, said.
"Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said we will get support if we ask the UN to recognize the Palestinian state," Abu-Marzuk told reporters after meeting with Lavrov in Moscow on Monday.
Abu-Mazruk also said representatives of Fatah and Hamas will meet in Cairo in early June to discuss further prospects of Palestinian reconciliation.
"In early June we, the prime ministers of both cabinets [the governments of the Western bank of the Jordan and the Gaza Strip] will meet in Cairo and announce the results of the meeting in the city of Ramallah and the Gaza Strip," he said.
