TBILISI. May 24 (Interfax) - Georgia has not increased control on its ground and maritime borders, Head of the Georgian Interior Ministry's Information Analysis Department Shota Utiashvili told journalists on Monday.
"All checkpoints are operating as usual. No special, let alone preventive, measures have been taken," he said, commenting on media reports about the toughening of control on the Dagestani stretch of the Russian-Georgian border.
The situation is the same in the areas adjacent to the conflict zones, where checkpoints are operating as usual, Utiashvili said.
The Kakheti Information Center said earlier that the Georgian Interior Ministry deployed its special forces in the Kvareli district on the border with Russia's Dagestan. The special forces unit is controlling border roads and tracks, reports said.
The unit was deployed on this section of the border after ex-Defense Minister Irakly Okruashvili announced plans to come to Georgia on May 25, a source said.
