MOSCOW. May 24 (Interfax) - A collegial meeting held at the Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday and chaired by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the role and place of the United Nations in the modern international coordinates system.
"Russia has reaffirmed its strategic course towards comprehensive consolidation of the position of the UN as a leading universal forum addressing important tasks such as maintaining global security, respect for human rights and the supremacy of law in international affairs, the development of economic and environmental cooperation, preventing and responding to humanitarian and technological disasters," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement after the meeting.
There are fears that "the processes occurring in various parts of the world, along with new challenges and threats, could have an adverse effect on the emerging multi-polar system of international relations," the ministry said.
"This leaves no alternative to the search, primarily under the UN aegis, for collective solutions to the most acute problems," it said.
"The collegium has pointed out that Russia's participation in the UN system is an important tool of assisting the modernization and innovative development of the Russian economy," the ministry said.
"The meeting has resulted in a decree that outlines specific measures to address Russia's foreign policy interests in working on a whole host of issues on the UN agenda," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
