MOSCOW. May 24 (Interfax) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has signed a decree on "Public Councils at the Russian Interior Ministry and its territorial offices," the Kremlin said.
Public councils will be formed to align socially significant interests of the public with those of the authorities, local governments, public organizations, human rights groups, religious and other organizations, the decree said.
A public council is an advisory body that makes decisions in the form of a recommendation.
Among the key objectives of a public council is to get individuals and public organizations involved in the implementation of the government policy on maintaining public order, preventing wrongdoing and ensuring public safety.
Public councils will analyze public opinions about police work and present results to senior police officials.
The councils will also conduct a public analysis of federal bills and other regulatory acts regarding police work.
