Moscow urges Russians to avoid visiting Yemen

MOSCOW. May 25 (Interfax) - Russia's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday expressed "serious concern about the protracted domestic crisis in Yemen, which is acquiring increasingly dangerous dimensions," and again urged Russians to avoid visits to Yemen that "are not vitally necessary" and recommended that Russians who currently are in the Arab country leave it.

"We again persistently urge the government and all opposition factions to give up the use of force as a means of attaining political goals," the ministry said in a statement.

"We wish to emphasize that a peaceful dialogue based on readiness for consensus and respect for the interests of all the parties to the conflict is the only possible way to normalize the situation in the Republic of Yemen, to help cope with the crisis, and to launch a wide-scale national political process that would open up the road to urgent social, political and economic reforms," the ministry said.

On Monday there were fierce clashes in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, between security forces and members of an influential clan who were demanding the resignation of the president and democratic reforms.
