Some 500 people come to support opposition in Tbilisi

TBILISI. May 25 (Interfax) - The opposition leaders' call on opposition activists to come to the building of Georgia Public Television at noon local time on May 25 has so far not yielded results.

There are currently some 500 people at the site, an Interfax correspondent has reported.

Georgy Kobakhidze, one of the rally organizers, told reporters the main rally demanding the resignation of President Mikheil Saakashvili will be held in Tbilisi's Liberty Square at 3:00 p.m. local time.

"We are expecting several thousands of people to take part in the rally. The purpose of our protest is to prevent the incumbent president from receiving the May 26 military parade because he does not have any rights to do so," Kobakhidze said.

On Tuesday, opposition leader Nino Burjanadze called on all people who are unhappy with the authorities to come to a protest at noon on May 25.

"We are expecting all of Georgia to participate. Those who want to live in a decent country will come," Burjanadze said.

Burjanadze reiterated that Georgian public organization People's Assembly, which she leads, has disassociated itself from all processes that could potentially pose threats to the protesters, as well as any outside assistance provided to Georgia.

Speaking about the decision made by the Georgian Party not to take part in the rally, Burjanadze said some of its leaders, including former defense minister Irakly Okruashvili, "are playing along with the authorities."

"I am ashamed for Okruashvili. He was a defense minister and he should keep his word. He is not going to leave his comfortable place in Paris. By changing his mind about participating in the protest in Tbilisi, Okruashvili turned out a coward, just like President Saakashvili," she said.
