MOSCOW. May 25 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia's Liner submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile, which was successfully test-fired on May 20, is a heavily modernized Sineva missile, a defense industry source said on Wednesday.
"It has been possible to improve some tactical and technical characteristics of Sineva. This has provided the Liner missile with new resources for piercing enemy missile defenses," the source told Interfax-AVN.
The weight and power of its warhead also make Liner different from Sineva, he said.
"Sineva has more potential for modernization," the source said.
The Liner project was launched in 2007.
The missile's May 20 test, in which the Liner was fired from strategic nuclear submarine Yekaterinburg of the Northern Fleet, was first reported by the Makeyev State Rocket Center. The report appeared on the website of the firm, based in Miass, Chelyabinsk region.
The Defense Ministry said a Sineva was test-fired from the Yekaterinburg that day.
Sineva was put in service in 2007.
