U.S. ambassador concerned about opposition plans to hold protest on Georgian Independence Day

TBILISI. May 26 (Interfax) - Certain groups of the Georgian radical opposition are trying to trigger an armed confrontation for hampering celebrations of the 20th independence anniversary, U.S. Ambassador to Georgia John Bass said on Wednesday in comment on the opposition rally in Tbilisi.

The protest should not breach the rights of other citizens or limit their activity, movements or celebrations of important dates, he said.

Bass said he was concerned about certain people amongst the protesters trying to instigate a confrontation and tensions.

These attempts are hampering the authorities to meet the protesters' demands in a peaceful way and are reducing people's confidence in the protesters, he said.

The opposition People's Assembly was held in front of the Georgian parliament building in Tbilisi on Wednesday. The place is supposed to host a military parade on the occasion of Georgia's Independence Day on May 26.
