Helicopter regiment may be formed within Airborne Forces

MOSCOW. May 26 (Interfax-AVN) - The Airborne Forces will present to the General Staff a plan of the establishment of a helicopter regiment to be based in Ulyanovsk or Pskov, Airborne Forces Commander Lt. Gen. Vladimir Shamanov told reporters on Thursday.

"There are two options and both of them will be suggested to the General Staff," he said.

It would be best to deploy the helicopter regiment at a short distance from the location of an airborne regiment, division or brigade, he said. For instance, there are two airfields and a well-developed construction industry in Ulyanovsk where the 31st separate airborne brigade is based. "It will not be difficult to create an airbase infrastructure there," the general said.

It is also possible to deploy the helicopter regiment near Pskov, where two airborne regiments are stationed and there is an airfield with Ilyushin Il-76 jets on it. "It is quite possible to base the helicopters together with the Il-76. In this case, the airborne regiments may become a part of tactical or operative-tactical forces," Shamanov said.
