Rebel convicts in Russian jail free one of hostages - agency

PSKOV, Russia. May 27 (Interfax) - Rebel convicts in a Russian high-security prison who on Friday took hostage six female members of the jail's medical personnel released one of them after talks with officials, the Federal Penalty Enforcement Service (FSIN) said.

"One of the women released in the course of negotiations. The convicts have demanded money and alcoholic drinks. In addition, they demanded a car and 40,000 rubles. An ad hoc committee has been set up, there are negotiations in progress with the convicts and psychologists are working with them," Yulia Alyoshina, a spokeswoman for the FSIN branch for the Pskov region, told Interfax.

A special forces unit set off for the prison, located in the region's village of Seryodka, and Russian Investigative Committee and police experts were working on the site.

An Investigative Committee official told Interfax that the rebels were holding the women captive by threatening them with a "piercing object."
