DEAUVILLE. May 30 (Interfax) - Russia does not support the idea of toughening the economic sanctions on Syria, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said.
"The issue of Syria was discussed in our consultations. Russia has relations with Syria. I had a phone conversation with President Bashar Asad just two days ago," Medvedev said at a press conference following the G8 summit in France on Friday.
Speaking about sanctions, Medvedev reiterated that the U.S. and the EU have already imposed sanctions on Syria. "The number of sanctions, as a rule, does not always determine the result. Seriously speaking, no one has intensively suggested the imposition of sanctions in the Security Council," Medvedev said.
"I really stated my position at a press conference in Moscow. We don't support sanctions," Medvedev said.
