Margelov sees his mission in Libya as aiding conflicting parties to reach consensus

MOSCOW. May 30 (Interfax) - The Kremlin's Envoy for Africa Mikhail Margelov will continue political contacts with the Libyan opposition leaders during his visit to Libya.

"My mission is to meet with the insurgent leaders and to continue what Russia has been doing for many months - mapping out ways to attain national consensus between the responsible representatives of the Libyan political elite, who want Libya to survive as a united and independent state, which plays an important role in the Arab world and in Africa," Margelov told Interfax by telephone.

Asked whether he will meet with Muammar Gaddafi, Margelov said that contact with Gaddafi is being maintained by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. "My mission is to meet with the opposition leaders. But if the president ordered, I would fly to Tripoli," he said.
