U.S. ambassador sees no need for legally binding guarantees to Russia on missile defense

MOSCOW. May 30 (Interfax) - Washington is confident that Russia does not need legally binding guarantees that the missile defense system is not aimed at it, because Russia and the United States now have many other cooperation options that can replace outdated guarantees, U.S. Ambassador to Moscow John Beyrle has said.

"We understand that Russia is seeking a legally-binding document. Our practice is dated by times when we had only legally binding documents. Now we have much greater opportunities for cooperation that ultimately will give us more security and self-confidence than these old legally binding documents," he said on Ekho Moskvy radio.
