Over 30 militants killed in Kabardino-Balkaria so far in 2011

NALCHIK. May 30 (Interfax) - A total of 37 militants and their abettors have been detained in Kabardino-Balkaria since the beginning of 2011, all of them are currently being prosecuted, the republic's prosecutors said on Friday.

"The general political and crime situation in Kabardino-Balkaria, in terms of factors characterizing a terrorist and extremist threat, remains tense and complicated," the Kabardino-Balkaria Prosecutor's Office said in a press release.

Thirty-one attacks have been committed against law enforcement officers and army service people since the beginning of 2011, prosecutors said.

Counter-terrorist operation (CTO) measures introduced in some areas remain in place, the statement said.

"Security and police forces carried out over 100 various operations, during which 34 militants and their abettors, including leaders and active members, had to be killed after they offered resistance," the statement said.

Also, law enforcement agencies have found seven militant bases, five caches with weapons and ammunition, seized a large number of improvised explosive devices and their components, as well as firearms and munitions, the press release said.
