Russia, Indonesia have joint naval exercises

VLADIVOSTOK. May 30 (Interfax) - A Pacific Fleet unit incorporating the Admiral Panteleyev large anti-sub ship and the Fotiy Krylov rescue towboat completed the visit to Makassar and held joint liaison and maneuvering exercises with the Indonesian Navy on Sunday.

"The Oswald corvette of the Indonesian Navy accompanied the Russian naval unit to the area of the exercises on the morning of May 29. The Russian and Indonesian warships had a successful liaison and maneuver training in the archipelago straits. That was the first Russian-Indonesian naval drill held in that format," Pacific Fleet commander press secretary Roman Martov told Interfax.

The Russian unit headed for the main base of the Pacific Fleet, Vladivostok, when the exercises were over.

The visit to Makassar was busy. Apart from the traditional rest, sightseeing tours and sport events, the Russian and Indonesian sailors discussed the suppression of sea piracy at a conference held on May 27.

The Russian unit together with warships of 15 states took part in the IMDEX 2011 international defense show in Singapore from May 16-20. The visit to Makassar started on May 25.
