Third of chemical armaments disposed of in Shchuchye, works to end in late 2015

KURGAN. May 30 (Interfax-AVN) - The chemical arms disposal site in Shchuchye, Kurgan region, disposed of 1,942 tons of war gases or 35.5% of Russia's total chemical armaments within two years of operation, the regional department for land reclamation and civil defense said on Monday.

"The first line is working, and the second one will enlarge the plant's capacity to 1,700 tons of war gases disposed of annually. The second line will be started up in 2013 in order to complete the disposal by the end of 2015," the report said.

The plant is disposing of artillery munitions carrying phosphorous organic poisons. It is necessary to dispose of 2 million munitions with 5,457 tons of sarin, soman and VX.
