Medvedev discusses Libya with South African President Zuma

MOSCOW. June 1 (Interfax) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev discussed the situation in Libya with South African President Jacob Zuma in a telephone conversation on Tuesday evening.

"Just as was agreed upon between the Russian and South African leaders during their previous telephone conversation on May 28, Jacob Zuma told Medvedev about the results of his recent mission to Libya under a decision by the African Union extraordinary summit and about his meeting with Muammar Qadhafi during this trip," the Kremlin press service said.

The Russian president praised the efforts being made by the African Union and personally by Zuma to help end bloodshed in Libya as soon as possible and create conditions for the Libyan people to decide on their country's fate, it said.

"Medvedev said about efforts Russia is making toward this goal and emphasized the need and preparedness for maintaining dialogue with all Libyan forces having a political future," it said.

The presidents expressed the hope that coordination of mediating efforts between Russia and South Africa and the African Union on the whole will help Libya return to a path of peaceful and sustainable development as soon as possible, the Kremlin said.
