SCO against weapons deployment in outer space - declaration

ASTANA. June 15 (Interfax) - The Shanghai Cooperation Organization leaders want a legally binding agreement drafted to prevent the deployment of weapons into outer space.

"The member-states advocate the use of outer space exclusively for peaceful purposes and emphasize the importance of ensuring security of space activities and drafting, within the framework of the Geneva disarmament conference, of a legally binding agreement on the prevention of arms deployment into outer space, of the use of force or threats to use force in relation to space facilities," the SCO said in a declaration passed in Astana on Wednesday on the tenth anniversary of the organization.

"Unilateral or unrestricted buildup of missile defense by one state or a narrow group of states may damage strategic stability and international security," the SCO said.
