CSTO chief calls illicit drug trade acute problem in FSU

MOSCOW. July 6 (Interfax-AVN) - A multi-tier system of repelling drug trafficking must be advanced in the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Secretary General of the organization Nikolai Bordyuzha has said.

"The coordinating council of the authorities responsible for resisting illicit drug trade should continue building up the efforts of law enforcement bodies in CSTO countries in resisting trans-border drug trafficking, become the generator of new ideas and the center of consolidation," he said in Yerevan on Wednesday at the 10th session of the coordinating council.

CSTO regards "the implementation of these measures as an element of the system of national and regional security of the organization's member-states," Bordyuzha said.

Given the understanding of the globality of the drug threat, it is essential to further advance the multi-tier system of repelling the expansion of drug trafficking, "placing emphasis on such strategic directions as the reduction of the demand and supply of drugs and undermining the economic foundations of drug crime," Bordyuzha said.

In his speech, Bordyuzha noted that illicit drug turnover remains an acute problem for CSTO member-states. "Transnational drug crime is increasingly consolidating with terrorist and extremist structures," he said.
