Over 60,000 violations done by Russian policemen in first half of 2011

MOSCOW. July 28 (Interfax) - The number of violations carried out by police officers grew by almost a fourth in the first half of this year, as compared to the corresponding period of last year, head of the Russian Interior Ministry's Internal Affairs Department Yuri Draguntsov said at the ministry meeting on Tuesday.

"About 60,500 violations done by police officers were exposed [the rate grew by 21%]. More than 35,000 officers who committed the violations were registered [a growth of 9%]," he said.

Criminal charges were brought against nearly 2,000 officers.

"A total of 1,166 officers were charged with abuse of office in the first half of 2011," he said.
