KHABAROVSK. Aug 2 (Interfax) - A criminal investigation has been launched based on terrorism charges after an explosion occurred on the premises of a nursery school in the city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur in Russia's Khabarovsk territory, injuring a five-year-old girl, Ilya Gudkov, spokesman for the Russian Investigative Committee's local branch told journalists.
The terrorism charge carries up to 20 years in prison.
"The preliminary information available to us suggests that the improvised explosive device consisted of a 10 cm by 10 cm festively decorated box with a spray can filled with pieces of a metallic wire," Gudkov said.
The bomb contained the equivalent of some seven grams of TNT, he said.
The girl spotted the box and kicked it, after which the spray can rolled out of the box and exploded, he said.
Khabarovsk territory Governor Vyacheslav Shport is personally overseeing an investigation into the incident.
"Situations where civilians become victims of terrorists have become frequent in our country recently. We need to counter this threat all together," Shport was quoted as saying by his press service.
